Chinese courts sentenced two Canadian citizens to death this week for drug smuggling in the latest plunge in Chinese-Canadian relations.

The death sentences were imposed by separate courts in the southern province of Guangdong, which borders Hong Kong.

Ye Jianhui was sentenced to death Friday by a court in Foshan for manufacturing and transporting drugs. On Thursday, Canadian Xu Weihong was sentenced to death by a court in Guangzhou for manufacturing ketamine.

Relations between China and Canada soured in 2018 when authorities in Vancouver arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou for extradition to the US on charges relating to business with Iran.

The Trump administration is waging a global campaign against Huawei, encouraging allies to ban the telecom company from infrastructure projects, citing cybersecurity concerns.

After Meng’s arrest, China resentenced Canadian Robert Schellenberg to death for drug dealing. He originally was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Another Canadian, Fan Wei, was sentenced to death in April 2019 for drug smuggling.

China also detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and business partner Michael Spavor shortly after Meng’s arrest for “vague national security crimes.”

China executes more people than any other country, though precise figures are unknown. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, China executed thousands of people last year. Canada carried out its last execution in 1962.
