More than 1,000 drivers in Japan were forced to spend the night stuck in a hellish 9 mile-long traffic jam caused by a snow storm, according to a report Friday.
The commuter nightmare on the Kanetsu Expressway — which links Tokyo to the Niigata prefecture — lasted more than 40 hours in some sections, stranding motorists without food or water, CNN reported.
The terrible traffic started when a car became buried by snow during a blizzard Wednesday night — sending traffic grinding to a halt, the outlet reported, citing the firm that operates the thoroughfare, the Nippon Expressway Company.
The number of tortured drivers inching along then peaked Thursday night — stretching about 9.3 miles as emergency responders handed out bread, rice balls and bottled water.
As of Friday, lanes heading out of Tokyo were cleared — but at least 1,000 motorists heading into the city were still stuck in the snowy mess, the outlet reported.
Meanwhile, New York City had its own snow storm this week, with Winter Storm Gail dumping nearly a foot of snow on the Big Apple Wednesday night.
