Israel archaeologists have discovered Dead Sea Scroll fragments in a remote desert cave in the Judean Desert, around 25 miles south of Jerusalem.
Biblical text is written upon the nearly 80 pieces of parchment, displaying Greek words from the books of Zechariah and Nahum as well as a Greek rendition of a book featured in the Hebrew Bible, the Twelve Minor Prophets.
The Dead Sea Scrolls are incredibly important in the realm of theological history due to the fact that they hold the earliest known copies of religious texts and documents that detail the main beliefs of the Hebrew Bible.
The Israeli archaeologists believe that these Dead Sea Scroll fragments may have been hidden in the cave during a Jewish revolt against the Romans almost 2,000 years ago.
Along with the scrolls, other incredibly significant artifacts have been discovered within other caves in the area throughout the past: a 6,000-year-old skeleton of a child; a large woven basket from the Neolithic period that is approximately 10,500-years-old; and other organic materials that the climate within these caves managed to preserve.
“When we think about the biblical text, we think about something very static. It wasn’t static. There are slight differences and some of those differences are important,” says Joe Uziel, Head of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Dead Sea Scrolls unit.
“Every little piece of information that we can add, we can understand a little bit better how the biblical text came into its traditional Hebrew form.”
