Two Palestinian intelligence officials were killed by Israeli gunfire in the West Bank in the early hours of Thursday morning, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

Adham Aliwi, 23, and Taisir Aisa, 33, were shot by Israeli Border Police's special anti-terror unit, or Yamam in Hebrew. Both served in the Palestinian intelligence headquarters in Jenin, where the incident occurred.

The Border Police said in a statement that the Yamam intended to arrest two Islamic jihad operatives who were suspected of shooting at Israeli army forces in recent months.

One suspect, Jamil Al-Amouri, was killed and another, Wisam Abu Zeid, was wounded.

According to the Border Police, Al-Amouri was involved in a shooting attack.

The Border Police said in a statement that an exchange of fire broke out when the Yamam forces tried to arrest Al-Amouri and Abu Zeid. It added that other armed individuals who were at the scene started to shoot at the Yamam forces; one of them was shot dead and two were wounded.

A general strike was announced in Jenin Thursday following the incident. In an interview with Radio Ashams, Jenin Governor Akram Al-Rajoub called the incident "very serious."

According to Al-Rajoub, Palestinian security forces had no prior information or coordination regarding the entry of Israeli forces into Jenin.

The office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a statement condemning the killing of the tree Palestinians.

Abbas’ spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said that "the continued actions of Israeli authorities, the crude violations of the rights of the Palestinian people and the daily acts of killing, including what happened today in Jenin, represent a clear violation of international law and will raise tensions."

Abu Rudeineh said Israel bears responsibility for this escalation and its implications, and the international community must provide protection for the Palestinian people.

He also mentioned the continued construction of settlements and what he called "continued provocations" on the part of settlers.

Abu Rudeineh urged the Biden administration to pressure Israel to prevent a deterioration of the situation "while it is still possible."

The relationship between Palestinian security forces and the Israeli army is based on well-known procedures and rules, including close coordination between the two parties.

An event of this nature is highly unusual since Palestinian security officials typically try to avoid confrontations with the IDF, particularly during Israeli military operations in Palestinian cities.
