Wild attacks on politicians: From Macron slap to George W. Bush shoe throw - New York Post

Those in power are bound to be political targets.

So when French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face by an angry agitator, he was not the first leader to be subjected to a political attack that escalated to a physical one.

Here are just a few of the wildest attacks on the political stage — targeting leaders from former US President George W. Bush to former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger:

US President George W. Bush

Bush had shoes chucked at him by an Iraqi journalist during a trip to Baghdad in 2008.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who worked for Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network, took off his shoes, one by one, and lobbed them at Bush’s head during a farewell news conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in his palace.

“This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog,” he yelled in Arabic.

But the president swiftly ducked both shoes, which flew over his head.

“That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know,” Bush quipped at the time.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard

Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was subjected to Vegemite sandwiches hurled at her by a student as she toured a school in Queensland in 2013.

“One kid thought he might just be a little bit naughty,” the prime minister said at the time of the incident.

School officials identified the culprit as 16-year-old Kyle Thomson, Agence France-Press reported.

But Thomson denied that he was the one responsible for the stunt, claiming he was actually the one who tried to block the popular Aussie edible from being thrown, the outlet reported.

“I hit the sandwich out of the kid’s hands because he threw it and there was another one so I hit it out of his hand,” he said.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, mayoral candidate Manny Gonzales

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III, who is running for mayor of Albuquerque, was taunted during a rally by a drone with a sex toy attached to it — only to then be punched in the face by the man flying it.

The Democratic candidate was speaking on stage earlier this month when the drone — known as the “Dongcopter” — started making its rounds at the Revel Entertainment Center, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

When the venue confiscated the device, its owner,  20-year-old Kaelan Ashby Dreyer, attempted to get it back, the outlet reported.

A scuffle followed and Dreyer threw a punch at the candidate’s arm while reportedly yelling, “He’s a tyrant.”

French President Emmanuel Macron

The French president was on a tour to “take the country’s pulse” amid the coronavirus pandemic when he was attacked on June 8 by an angry man in Tain-l’Hermitage.

The man began shouting, “À bas la Macronie!”or “Down with Macronia!” at Macron, before he delivered a sharp slap to the leader’s left cheek.

Macron’s bodyguards swiftly intervened and two people were arrested, local media reported.

“The man who tried to slap the president and another individual are currently being questioned by the gendarmerie,” the regional prefecture said in a statement, according to AFP.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

The former governor was just a candidate when he took an egging before a major campaign speech in Long Beach, California, in 2003.

Schwarzenegger was struck in the shoulder by a raw egg as he shook supporters’ hands while walking up to the podium, Fox News reported.

One of his campaign workers attempted to wipe off the egg, but the candidate continued to greet well-wishers and eventually ditched his yellow sports jacket to give the speech in just a collared shirt, the outlet reported.
