More than 183,000 new cases of coronavirus infections were reported to the World Health Organization on Sunday in what was a record single-day increase, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news conference Monday.
Since the start of the outbreak, more than 465,000 people have died, while some countries that had previously suppressed the virus are seeing new upswings, he added.
Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, stated that he didn't believe the increase was simply due to more testing.
"Hospital admissions are rising, deaths are rising ... there's a shift in the sense the virus is very well established at the global level," he said. "It has reached some of the most populous areas in the world ... [and] is now peaking in a number of large countries at the same time."
Ryan pointed in particular to rising caseloads in the Americas and South Asia, as well the Middle East and Africa.
