COLUMBUS, Ohio - The number of newly reported deaths of people with coronavirus increased Tuesday’s by 87 from the previous day’s report, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
“This is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since early May," Gov. Mike DeWine said during his briefing Tuesday. "And it’s the third highest number since the beginning of the pandemic.”
The 87 reported deaths is significantly higher than the 21-day rolling average of 24 deaths.
A total of 4,506 people have died with COVID-19 in Ohio.
In all, 139,485 people have had coronavirus in Ohio, including 1,001 new cases reported from Monday to Tuesday. This is close to the 21-day average of 1,095 new cases.
Tuesday’s new cases and deaths didn’t necessarily all happen in the past 24 hours. There can be a lag of when they occur and when they are reported by local entities.
The cases and deaths of coronavirus are both those confirmed through testing and those the state and federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider “probable,” which means they are diagnosed by a physician, among other criteria.
The Ohio Department of Health says 117,130 people are presumed recovered from COVID-19.
Testing
Over 36,000 new tests have been performed between Monday and Tuesday’s state reports to a total of 2.65 million tests.
The number reflects all tests performed. Some people get more than one test.
But if a person tests positive more than once, they’re counted as just one case.
The positivity rate for coronavirus tests as of Sunday, the most recent day for which data was available, was 3.1%. The seven-day rolling average is 3.7%.
Hospitalizations
The number of people in Ohio hospitals with coronavirus is 666 on Tuesday, according to information the Ohio Hospital Association provided the state.
This included 223 people in intensive-care units and 126 people on ventilators.
This is lower than a week ago, 685 people were hospitalized, including 237 people in ICUs and 132 people on ventilators.
