The fleece shorn from a wild sheep found in an Australian forest, has weighed in at more than 78 pounds.

According to a report by Reuters, the ailing sheep - named Baarack by rescuers - hadn’t been shorn for many years. The fleece it yielded weighed “nearly half the weight of an adult kangaroo,” the report said.

Kyle Behrend, who’s with the Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, located near Lancefield, Victoria, about 37 miles north of Melbourne, said the person who spotted the sheep contacted the mission, seeking help, Reuters reported.

Behrend told Reuters, “It would appear Baarack was once an owned sheep,” since “he had at one time been ear-tagged, however these appear to have been torn out by the thick matted fleece around his face.”

Behrend added, “Sheep need to be shorn at least annually otherwise the fleece continues to grow and grow, as happened here.”

While Behrend explained that Baarack’s hooves “were in great condition from running over the rocks in the forest,” he was underweight and “could barely see,” due to the excess wool around his face, the report cited.

Behrend said that Baarack is now “settling in with other rescued sheep at Edgar’s Mission,” adding that it shows “what incredibly resilient and brave animals sheep really are and we could not love them any more if we tried,” Reuters cited.

Baarack’s wool wasn’t the heaviest ever recorded.

According to a report by USA Today, the weight of Baarack’s fleece was impressive, but it was still several pounds off the world record of 41.1 kilograms, or slightly more than 90 pounds. This is a record held by Chris, a Merino rescued in Australia in 2015.

Chris died in 2019 at Little Oak Sanctuary, which cared for the animal after shearing his massive coat, the report said.

According to USA Today, Little Oak had this to say at the time of Chris’ death: “While the large fleeces often draw international interest, they’re nothing to be proud of. This is no title to covet, as it amounts to being the most neglected sheep in the world.”
