Tuesday’s second night of the 2020 Republican National Convention is underway, with the GOP looking to maintain the energy and momentum built in the opening installment.
A host of guests is on tap to speak to the evening’s theme of America as the “Land of Opportunity,” among them first lady Melania Trump and two of President Trump’s children, Eric and Tiffany.
The first lady is speaking live from the White House Rose Garden, newly overhauled at her request in what she has called an “act of expressing hope and optimism for the future.”
Only the second foreign-born first lady in U.S. history, Mrs. Trump, 50, is a native of Slovenia, a former communist country in eastern Europe. She gave up studying architecture to pursue a career as a fashion model, arrived in New York in 1996 and met Donald Trump two years later.
She became his third wife in 2005 and gave birth to their now 14-year-old son, Barron, in 2006 — the year she became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Eric and Tiffany Trump are speaking one night after oldest sibling Don Jr. and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, each made the case for four more years.
Trump himself is also appearing, as he has promised to do during each of the RNC’s four nights.
Other speakers on deck include Capitol Hill ally Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who pre-recorded remarks from an undisclosed secure location in Jerusalem while on official US business.
The RNC kicked off Monday night with highlighted speakers including South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and Democratic Georgia State Rep. Vernon Jones.
