Today, in Iowa, President Biden continued to pin blame on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine for much of the higher costs facing Americans and announced a move to expand the use of a blended form of gasoline that uses ethanol. The move, which will benefit Iowa corn farmers, is designed to curb prices at the pump.
“Your family budget, your ability to fill up your tank, none of it should hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commits genocide a half a world away, Biden said at an event hours after the release of a new inflation report that showed prices rose 8.5 percent across the board in March compared with a year ago.
Biden later told reporters that his choice of the word “genocide” was deliberate, adding: “It’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is just trying to wipe out even the idea of being Ukrainian.”

On our radar: No public events for Biden on Wednesday
Return to menuBiden is not scheduled to participate in any public events Wednesday. With Congress on recess, that sets up a potentially slow day in Washington — but that could change quickly. There is likely to be worldwide reaction to Biden’s words Tuesday — with the president calling Putin’s actions in Ukraine “genocide.”
Here are other items we’ll be watching Wednesday:
- First lady Jill Biden and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona will visit Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster, Mo. There they will highlight programs that support military-connected students.
- The Iowa Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case of Abby Finkenauer, a former House member who was knocked off a June ballot for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. Finkenauer, considered to be Democrats’ best hope to unseat Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley, was removed from the ballot because she didn’t gather enough petition signatures.
